Question: What are the qualities of a good Web designer?

Answer: The following points can make the difference between success and failure on the Internet and can explain the difference in pricing from designer to designer.

Experience: Remember you get what you pay for. Experience is crucial. Experienced Designers know how to work closely with marketers keeping your site ranking high in the search engines.  How long have they been in the industry.  How many clients do they currently have.  The more the better..  Do they have the option of making your site more mobile device friendly?

Recommendations: Go on the Internet and view the designers Web sites, interview your designer, and call their references just as you would hiring an employee.

Graphics and Design: Can they do custom graphics that load quickly or are they strictly a scan and template designer? Graphics on the Internet have a limited resolution, but a good designer can scan and get a fairly crisp image. Custom graphics add quality and originality.  Stay away from Flash designed sites and entry pages... they hurt conversions!

Marketing and Meta: Do they know and understand the importance of Internet marketing and Meta tags? Proper order and understanding of Meta tags is crucial to your ranking in the search engines. How a site is built has everything to do with how it ranks on the search engines.   Make sure they are aware of SEO and code sites that are as w3.org compliant as possible.   Content for your website is generally not included in the price.  Do they have trained writers on staff to assist for an additional charge if you need them who are also trained in writing for better search engine optimization?

Organization skill: Are their Web sites easy to navigate and understand? All Web sites should have access to every page on every page, as well as an e-mail link at the bottom of every page.  For conversion purposes do they have an incentive on their own page that encourages someone to contact them?  If they don’t on their own site then chances are they don’t understand what needs to be integrated into their clients sites for better conversions.

Links: Make sure all the links in their Web sites are functional and actually take you somewhere. There is nothing more unprofessional than a Web site with dead links.  Do they run a dead link check when the site is completed?  Remember that a linking strategy should be part of your sites' marketing

Flexibility: Make sure they are flexible with hosting companies. Pay your hosting service directly not through your Web designer. This ensures you're only paying what the hosting company is charging.

Hosting: Make sure that if your design firm also has their own web servers that they are backed up every day.  That they have 24/7 technical support and provide strong security measures for hackers as well as physical invaders.   Make sure the server is a newer one and ask them when the last time their server was down and how fast it took for a response.  You can also self watch your server uptime by using a free service internetseer.com.

Marketing: Remember to ask if they are familiar with search engine optimization.  There are two types of SEO or search engine optimization.  One is called natural or organic search engine optimization.  The other is called pay per click advertising.   Both are critical as most visitors will indeed come to your website from the search engines.  Getting listed is free; however getting you to rank at the top will take a professional search engine optimization firm like CyberMark.
