Website Design for the iPad

With the iPad hitting stores Saturday, many are excited to see just what Apple’s newest development has in store. Whether you pre-ordered your iPad from Apple back in March or think it’s just a giant iPhone Touch, you can’t ignore the increasing amount of users who regularly access the Internet from Apple mobile devices. Here are a few things to factor into your website design to make sure millions of Apple mobile users can view your content.

Consider fluid width design.

Because iPhones and iPads screens are different widths depending on whether they’re turned vertically or horizontally, be sure that your website can go with the flow. Your website designer can create CSS styles for both portrait and landscape layouts or, better yet, create content that can adapt to the screen resolution.

Rethink those links.

Hover effects work very well for finding links with pointers, but not so well with the tactile experience of iPhones and iPads. Instead of burying links in text, design your website with larger, easier-to-identify links for simpler navigation.

Forgo the Flash.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is known for his virulent anti-Flash views, citing that it’s too buggy. This, of course, is much to the chagrin of website owners with Flash video and audio content, which appears as gaping, blank space on iPhones and iPads. If you want Apple mobile users to be able to play your videos and audio files from their mobile device’s browser, you must convert those files to the Apple-favored HTML 5.

I hope the browsers can have extensions for SEO information to review a websites PR and Alexa rankings.

  2. Web Design Says:

I’m kind of hoping that straight up none of us will have to do anything about SEO for the iPad.

From what Apple is saying it sounds like they’ve tried to design around existing technologies, just presenting it in a much more “human friendly” way.
